We've been waiting and waiting.........and f-i-n-a-l-l-y our hummers and fireflies have made an appearance .
Each day, I have been walking 1 to 4 miles around the lakes with Honey and then sitting on our bench while she explores nearby and I work on my current needlepoint projects. Our weather lately, for the most part, has been unseasonably hot and e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y dry. This week, we had an awful thunderstorm with high winds, very hard rain, lightning and thunder. All of East Tennessee was under a thunderstorm warning. It always amazes me how Mother Nature often makes a potentially devastating happening be unusually beautiful at the the same time. The various stages of the storm......dark, ominous rain clouds, high winds that had the branches of our willows blowing straight out sideways, and an eeery golden and pink glow make a bad storm like that seem surreal. The lighting during each stage of the storm....as it first approached.... as it got worse and worse......as it was winding down.....and all the way to the calm after the storm.....are hard to describe. I made m-a-n-y photos; all I can say is, thank goodness for digital cameras!!! Even though the storm was so severe, the much-needed rain is certainly welcome. Our drought has been so bad that our hillsides are brown and it has been necessary to water around the house every night. Needless to say, it hasn't been necessary to mow as often as in past years. The weatherman has been saying that on some recent days, we have exceeded long-held records that were established way back in the 1930's! I'm noticing patches of green this morning; a very welcome sight!
How nice it is to have our hummers.....fireflies.....and now, hopefully, a break in the awful drought we have been experiencing. |
